Should've Gotten a Dog

I fell in love with you when you picked up that lost pup,

and he nestled into your arms like you were his momma

And it was ok that you ain’t love me back

Because all the while that you didn’t love me,

you treated me like that little dog

You held me close, made me feel safe

You smiled down at me, gave me a wink

And I was content in that, in you

But when you finally got around to loving me, you put me down and told me “hold on”

And you came back every few moons to pat me on the head and call me yours

Then you came back every now and again to shower me with anger that the outside world gave you

Soon enough, you came back every day to hand me the rest of the pain that you couldn’t hold

Now, as I look back on us and gather my recollections, I don’t wish I never loved you I wish you never loved me back
